This is an informal heads-up announcement. The Heliophysics and Planetary Science Office at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center anticipates filling a Planetary Scientist civil service position within the next several weeks. The candidate will fill a project scientist position for the Space Launch System (SLS), providing relevant expertise on Solar System destinations for human and robotic exploration. The candidate will also become a part of the MSFC Planetary Science group, focused on geologic investigation of planets, asteroids, and/or moons. We are especially interested in adding capability in remote sensing of solid surfaces to complement our existing expertise in geochronology and geophysics. The candidate is also expected to bring or build a strong independent scientific research program through peer-reviewed proposals to NASA programs and/or through involvement in NASA planetary missions.

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado is seeking a minimum one-year Postdoctoral Research Associate in the field of planetary science.  A strong candidate will have experience with several of the following areas:  planetary (Mars/Mercury/Moon) data processing and analysis, geologic mapping, research on fluvial/lacustrine processes on Mars, planetary volcanism, martian geochemistry/mineralogy/spectroscopy, field-based planetary analog studies, and/or hydrothermal systems.           

Requirements

• PhD related to planetary science with detailed knowledge of one or more of the following disciplines: planetary geology, interpretation of spacecraft data, and Mars science

• Experience analyzing and processing spacecraft data

• Experience with Geographic Information Systems

• Ability to conduct original research, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and give presentations of research at science conferences

• Preference for knowledge of and experience with: USGS ISIS software, ArcGIS, IDL/ENVI.

Caltech’s Keck Institute for Space Studies is accepting applications for a postdoctoral position in the field of planetary science in connection with an ongoing study entitled “New Approaches to Lunar Ice Detection and Mapping” (link). The objective of the project will be to collect and compare available spacecraft and telescope remote sensing data with the goal of forming a coherent picture of the distribution and nature of lunar ice deposits to help guide future exploration activities. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Planetary Science, Physics, Astronomy or related fields, and have experience working with large multidimensional datasets. The successful applicant will be based at either Caltech campus or the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The NASA Ames Intelligent Robotics Group (irg.arc.nasa.gov) has an immediate opening for a full-time data engineer / software developer to help create next generation planetary data systems and automated geospatial processing pipelines. This is a high-profile, high-impact opportunity to co-develop software that will make a difference in how we explore space and communicate our discoveries to the general public

Applicants should hold a B.S. in Computer Science (or equivalent work experience) and have excellent software engineering and system development skills. Requirements:

– 2+ years experience managing data with a geospatial component.
– 3+ years experience with software application or web service development
– Expert level experience with Linux software development
– Fluency in Python or another dynamically typed programming language
– Deep experience in JavaScript development, including use of an MV* web application framework such as Backbone.js
– Experience with the KML Specification for geographic data visualization

Knowledge of the following is greatly preferred:
– A maps-oriented Javascript API (e.g. Google Maps, Google Earth, OpenLayers, or Leaflet)
– An MVC application framework (e.g. Django)
– RESTful Web service architecture
– Projecting and manipulating geospatial data using libraries such as GEOS, Proj4, and/or GDAL
– The OGC Web Mapping Service (WMS) standard
