Planetary geologic maps have been funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by the USGS since 1961. The USGS Planetary Geologic Mapping Group at the Astrogeology Science Center in Flagstaff, AZ is critically involved in the scientific and technical aspects of geologic mapping process in support of NASA programs. This position is for an IT Specialist to work within the USGS Planetary Geologic Mapping Group in Flagstaff, AZ.

The position will primarily support the creation, review, and production of NASA-funded planetary geologic mapping projects by providing technical support with respect to Geographic Information Systems (GIS), metadata, and cartographic standards. This will include, but is not limited to, managing geospatial databases and data files, documenting and communicating mapping workflows, developing new scientific and/or cartographic tools for planetary data analysis, and routine IT support services.

As an IT Specialist (Applications Software) within the Astrogeology Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Scripts Python programs

Summary: The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado Boulder is seeking a talented scientist to work with the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS) team on the MAVEN mission. The IUVS team has made important discoveries in the areas of Mars aeronomy, atmospheric escape and evolution, aurora, nightglow, photochemistry, composition, dynamics and cloud formation, and more discoveries are anticipated.  The team is led by Nick Schneider.

Key Responsibilities: Observational studies of the Mars atmosphere through ultraviolet spectroscopy and imaging. Scientific analysis of data obtained, publication of results in appropriate scientific journals and presentation at conferences. Support for mission/instrument operations and observation planning. Operation and enhancement of automated data processing pipelines including retrievals of atmospheric properties. Mentoring of graduate and undergraduate student researchers.

Position Requirements: Ph.D in Planetary Science, Astronomy, Atmospheric Science, Physics or a related field. Coding proficiency in python, IDL or other scientific computing languages.

Desired Qualifications: Skill with data analysis, image processing and statistics. Familiarity with Mars atmospheric science, including one or more of the following: atmospheric structure, dayglow, nightglow, aurora, photochemistry, ultraviolet spectroscopy, atmospheric evolution, climate, waves and tides, familiarity with General Circulation Models and numerical simulation.

We seek an individual with the mathematics and physics training and expertise with scientific programming to model the surface temperature of an asteroid as it receives varying insolation over the course of the year. This work will be in service to the NASA Psyche mission and in collaboration with Prof. Elkins-Tanton. This individual will also undertake related research on the formation, evolution, and/or characterization of large asteroids and protoplanets in partnership with Prof. O’Rourke. The successful candidate will be encouraged to pursue research of their own interest and professional development in preparation for seeking a permanent position after their fellowship.

The initial appointment is for one year with subsequent annual renewal for up to two additional years contingent upon satisfactory performance, the needs of the university, and availability of resources.
