The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado is seeking a minimum one-year Postdoctoral Research Associate in the field of planetary science.  A strong candidate will have experience with several of the following areas:  planetary (Mars/Mercury/Moon) data processing and analysis, geologic mapping, research on fluvial/lacustrine processes on Mars, planetary volcanism, martian geochemistry/mineralogy/spectroscopy, field-based planetary analog studies, and/or hydrothermal systems.           

Requirements

• PhD related to planetary science with detailed knowledge of one or more of the following disciplines: planetary geology, interpretation of spacecraft data, and Mars science

• Experience analyzing and processing spacecraft data

• Experience with Geographic Information Systems

• Ability to conduct original research, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and give presentations of research at science conferences

• Preference for knowledge of and experience with: USGS ISIS software, ArcGIS, IDL/ENVI.

The International Max Planck Research School for Solar System Science at the University of Göttingen in Germany (Solar System School) offers a research-oriented doctoral program covering the physics of Solar system science. The science covered by the department Planets and Comets (one of three departments at the MPS) includes a wide spectrum of planetary research. We study the structure and composition of planets in our solar system as well as dynamic processes. The research includes the deep interior, surfaces, atmospheres and the plasma environment (thin hot charged particles in the environment) of the planets. The main focus lies in the research of the terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars) and the gas giants (Jupiter and Saturn) as well as small bodies including comets and asteroids. We study similarities and differences among the various objects and compare them with each other to better understand the evolution of our solar system.

Solar System School students collaborate with leading scientists in these fields and graduates are awarded a doctoral degree from the renowned University of Göttingen.

The Solar System School is open to students from all countries and offers an international three-year PhD program in an exceptional research environment with state-of-the-art facilities on the Göttingen Campus. The Space Physics and Planetary group at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP),
University of Colorado is involved in several space flight missions. We have a level 1 (post- doc)
position available, analyzing data from the MAVEN mission. The focus of the level 1 position is on
Mars ionosphere analysis using data from the Langmuir Probe and Waves (LPW) instrument with
support of data from all other instruments on the MAVEN spacecraft.

Candidates with planetary ionosphere data analysis experience are encouraged to apply. We will also
consider candidates with instrument hardware experience. Examples of the primary work tasks include:
instrument operation, data production, and software development.

The successful candidate will be working closely with Dr. Andersson and Prof. Ergun.

POSTDOCTORAL SCIENTIST: PLANETARY CLIMATE MODELING

Columbia University: 2-year Postdoctoral Research Scientist appointment to model radiative processes and their effect on planetary climates in a general circulation model.

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team from the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), GSFC, Columbia University, and other institutions. Team research addresses the habitability of past Solar System climates and exoplanet climates and informs the design of future exoplanet missions. The candidate will be expected to perform original research, present results at scientific meetings, and publish first-author peer-reviewed papers. The candidate will be resident at NASA GISS in New York City.

Requirements:  PhD. in atmospheric science, planetary science, astrobiology, astronomy, physics, or a similar field. Expertise in radiative transfer and willingness to become involved in radiation parameterization development are required, but the broad scope allows for many possible research directions using the model. Strong mathematics and programming skills are also required. Strong candidates will be interested in interdisciplinary questions and interacting with scientists from diverse fields. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline with experience conducting scientific research related to the Maven science objectives or the types of instruments included in the MAVEN science payload. Disciplined IDL and Fortran programming skills, demonstrated scientific writing ability, and experience in acquisition and analysis of data (especially magnetometer data) from space flight instruments are highly desirable.

The Department of Terrestrial Magnetism (DTM) of the Carnegie Institution of Washington seeks a staff scientist in the broad field of geophysics who will investigate solid-Earth processes at the planetary scale.
