Upcoming Planetary Science Research Position at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center

The Heliophysics and Planetary Science Branch at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama will soon be seeking a scientist to conduct research and to develop applications to solve challenging Planetary Science problems.  The selected candidate will add substantive capability synergistic with the current staff and the goals of NASA’s Artemis program and MSFC’s strategy to integrate human space flight and science robotic capabilities in the Artemis era.  The position is expected to be announced in January 2023 under the category of Research Space Scientist, at the GS-13 or GS-14 grade level, depending on qualifications. 

An outstanding candidate will be offered federal employment, joining more than 30 other federal employees, academic staff, and contractors supporting Planetary Science efforts within the Branch, a subset of the Science Research and Projects Division, and the Science and Technology Office at Marshall Space Flight Center.

The incumbent Planetary Scientist will have expertise in remote and/or in-situ sensing of planets, moons, and asteroids, and in the application and development of advanced tools, techniques, and/or data analysis/mining/machine learning techniques.  The candidate will be expected to lead the development of research proposals for new activities, lead a research team, execute funded projects, participate in conferences, have a demonstrated publication record, and author research papers in peer-reviewed literature.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Scholar position in planetary science and exoplanets at the University of California, Riverside (UCR). The successful applicant will work in the Planetary Research Laboratory, led by Dr. Stephen Kane. The primary research activities cover a broad range of exoplanet, planetary science, and astrobiology topics, including exoplanet detection and characterization, Venus (both intrinsically and as an exoplanet analog), orbital dynamics, atmospheres and climate, and planetary habitability. Typical data sources are Kepler, Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), Keck, the Automated Planet Finder (APF), MINERVA-Australis, and various Planetary Data System (PDS) mission archives. The group is also a member of the DAVINCI+ mission, a selected NASA mission to study the Venusian atmosphere. The Postdoctoral Scholar will primarily work on Venus science, Solar System exoplanet analogs, and climate simulations.

Candidates must hold a PhD in astronomy, physics, planetary sciences, geology or related field before their start date. Preference will be given to applicants with expertise in Venus, climate modeling, and/or atmospheric characterization of terrestrial exoplanets. The position is for two years with expected renewal for a third year contingent upon satisfactory research performance. The salary is competitive, and health benefits are provided.

The Institute of Planetary Research at the German Aerospace Center                                                                   
(DLR) in Berlin invites applications for a postdoc position within the                                                               
framework of a DLR junior research group. The group investigates the                                                                 
thermochemical evolution of Mars and Venus and employs an                                                                            
interdisciplinary approach that combines large-scale geodynamical                                                                    
models of thermal evolution with petrological and geological datasets.                                                               
The successful candidate will combine geomorphological analysis of the                                                               
Martian surface with modeling of the subsurface thermal environment of                                                               
Mars. The goal of the project is to collect a large and diverse dataset                                                              
about the geomorphology, spectroscopy and mineralogy of the Martian                                                                  
surface. These data, combined with results from large-scale                                                                          
geodynamical models of the Martian interior, will be applied to                                                                      
interpret the evolution and present-day state of the subsurface                                                                      
environment of Mars. In particular, this work will be used to provide                                                                
constraints on the past and present-day distribution of potential                                                                    
subsurface water on Mars and to identify possible habitable regions in

ESA Research Fellowships in Space Science
 

The European Space Agency awards several postdoctoral fellowships each year.

The aim of these fellowships is to provide scientists in their early career,
holding a PhD or the equivalent degree, with the means of performing research
in fields related to the ESA Science Programme.

Areas of research include planetary science, astronomy and
astrophysics, solar and solar-terrestrial science, plasma physics and
fundamental physics. The fellowships have a duration of two years, with the
possible extension to three years, and are tenable at the
European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, Netherlands,
or at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) in Villafranca del Castillo,
near Madrid, Spain.

Applications are now solicited for fellowships in space science to begin in
the fall of 2020. Preference will be given to applications submitted by
candidates in an early stage of their career. Candidates not holding
a PhD yet are encouraged to apply, but they must provide evidence of
receiving their degree before starting the fellowship.

ESA fellows are enrolled in ESA’s Social Security Scheme, which covers
medical expenses. A monthly deduction covers these short-term and long-term risks.

The deadline for applications is 1 October 2019.

POSTDOCTORAL SCIENTIST: PLANETARY CLIMATE MODELING

Columbia University: 2-year Postdoctoral Research Scientist appointment to model radiative processes and their effect on planetary climates in a general circulation model.

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team from the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), GSFC, Columbia University, and other institutions. Team research addresses the habitability of past Solar System climates and exoplanet climates and informs the design of future exoplanet missions. The candidate will be expected to perform original research, present results at scientific meetings, and publish first-author peer-reviewed papers. The candidate will be resident at NASA GISS in New York City.

Requirements:  PhD. in atmospheric science, planetary science, astrobiology, astronomy, physics, or a similar field. Expertise in radiative transfer and willingness to become involved in radiation parameterization development are required, but the broad scope allows for many possible research directions using the model. Strong mathematics and programming skills are also required. Strong candidates will be interested in interdisciplinary questions and interacting with scientists from diverse fields. The Department of Terrestrial Magnetism (DTM) of the Carnegie Institution of Washington seeks a staff scientist in the broad field of geophysics who will investigate solid-Earth processes at the planetary scale. Areas of expertise and research emphases might include (but are not limited to) the thermal history, convection, differentiation, and tectonics of Earth and other terrestrial planets, connections between planetary formation processes and past and present geological and seismological structure of the Earth. Postdoctoral position on Venus science at Paris Observatory

The position is available on Oct. 1, 2013 for a duration of two years, to work on millimeter-observations of Venus’ atmosphere obtained with the ALMA interferometer.

The successful candidate will lead high profile research based on exploitation of ESO/Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of Venus’ upper atmosphere chemistry and dynamics. His/her main work will be in the analysis, modeling and interpretation of the upper atmosphere structure, variability of trace species (CO, HDO, SO, SO2), wind measurements and their spatial and temporal variability at different vertical levels. The work will be carried out in Laboratoire d’Etudes Spatiales et d’Instrumentation en Astrophysique (LESIA), a department of Paris Observatory in Meudon in collaboration with Drs T. Encrenaz, R. Moreno, E. Lellouch.

Candidates should have a PhD in atmospheric science, with strong background in radiative transfer modeling of planetary atmosphere in the millimeter/submillimeter range. Experience in data-reduction with radio-interferometer is highly desirable. Also essential are experience with scientific computing environments, and a reasonable number of high quality publications commensurate with stage of career.
