To increase the scientific return from its space science missions, the European Space Agency (ESA) welcomes applications from scientists interested in pursuing research projects based on data publicly available in the ESA Space Science Archives (https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/esdc).

The ESA Archival Research Visitor Programme is open to scientists, at all career levels, affiliated with institutes in ESA Member States and Collaborating States. Early-career scientists (within 10 years of the PhD) are particularly encouraged to apply. Applications by PhD students are also welcome.

During their stay, visiting scientists will have access to archives and mission specialists for help with the retrieval, calibration, and analysis of archival data. In principle, all areas of space research covered by ESA science missions can be supported.

Residence lasts typically between one and three months, also distributed over multiple visits. Research projects can be carried out at ESAC (Madrid, Spain) and at ESTEC (Noordwijk, Netherlands). To offset the expenses incurred by visitors, ESA covers travel costs from and to the home institution and provides support for lodging expenses and meals.

Applications received before 1 November 2022 will be considered for visits in spring and summer 2023.

The postdoctoral scholar will work in collaboration with Dr. Cristina Thomas and other project team members on the MIT-Hawaii Near Earth Object Spectroscopic Survey (MITHNEOS), a long-running near-infrared spectral survey using SpeX on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF). Leadership of the program has recently passed to Dr. Thomas at NAU. The postdoctoral scholar will take a leading role in all aspects of the survey including target selection, spectroscopic observations (~1 night per month), reduction, and data analysis.

LRO Diviner Postdoctoral Researcher

Duties: (In collaboration with the PI)

  • Analyze data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Diviner Lunar Radiometer Experiment to assess the compositional, space weathering, and thermophysical properties of the lunar surface.
  • Acquire thermal infrared spectra of minerals and mineral mixtures in a simulated lunar environment to enable more quantitative interpretation of Diviner data.
  • Collaborate with the PI and Diviner Co-investigators to apply results to analysis of orbital remote sensing data. 
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals based on this work.
  • Evaluate results within the framework of current understanding of the field, as determined by periodical/literature search.
  • Other duties as needed

Postdoctoral Position in Planetary Astronomy

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in planetary astronomy within Caltech’s Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences. The successful applicant will collaborate with the de Kleer research group on the interpretation of thermal data of icy moons and small bodies from ALMA, the VLA, and JWST. The work will involve reduction and analysis of thermal data, as well as collaboration on the development of (sub)surface models which will be used to characterize (sub)surface processes on these worlds. The project requires training in mathematics and physics as well as strong scientific programming skills. Experience working with astronomical or spacecraft data is required, and experience with radio interferometry and/or mid-infrared spectroscopy is preferred. The successful candidate will have opportunities to mentor graduate and undergraduate students.

The start date is flexible, but will be no sooner than June 1, 2022. The initial duration of the position is one year, with renewal for up to two additional years. The position offers a competitive salary, benefits, and annual research budget, as well as access to Caltech’s extensive resources, including the Keck and Palomar Observatories and computational facilities.

Postdoctoral position in Mass Spectrometry of Lunar Volatiles

Come work on the origin and provenance of lunar volatiles using the Peregrine Ion-Trap Mass Spectrometer (PITMS) on Astrobotic’s Peregrine Mission-1 and the Mass Spectrometer observing lunar operations (MSolo) on the VIPER mission. You will work on this research using a combination of modeling volatile sources and isotopic signatures, data analysis from these instruments, and collaborating with datasets from other instruments. You will gain hands-on experience by participating in the flight operation of these instruments to collect, analyze, and archive data. You will be expected to present results at appropriate conferences and in peer-reviewed publications. The Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Science at Purdue University has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to join the Mastcam-Z team on the Perseverance rover, part of the Mars 2020 mission, to conduct geological investigations using Mastcam-Z images and multispectral data in concert with other payload and remote sensing datasets. Possible investigation topics include but are not limited to igneous, fluvial, and impact processes, as well as diagenesis and alteration, as observed in Jezero crater and through regional and global context studies. The postdoc would also support Mastcam-Z and project-level operations roles and actively participate in collaborative team scientific activities. A PhD in geology, planetary science, or a closely related field is required. Experience in reflectance spectroscopy or remote sensing data analysis is preferred. The position is available immediately and is expected to run for 2 years pending availability of funding.  A background check is required for employment in this position. Position Description:

The Nonproliferation and National Security Department has an opening for a Post Doc to assist with the development of remote sensing algorithms to monitor uranium mining activities.  The development of the algorithms will be based on new, high-quality laboratory spectral data that will be acquired as part of an international multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary effort. The position will require close collaboration with the partner institutions.  This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, test, and validate machine-learning image processing and analysis methods
  • Participate in a multi-institutional proof-of-concept study
  • Maintain spectral data base and upload data to community spectral data bases
  • Assist in and help coordinate experimental work to collect laboratory spectral data

The position is based at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York (Long Island) and the selected candidate will work closely with project team members at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, NY at Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Israel.
