Rowan University’s newly launched Catalysts for Sustainability program seeks to hire ten new faculty to develop, advance, and communicate solutions to humanity’s most pressing existential threats posed by the climate and biodiversity crises. The university-wide cohort will lead and collaborate across colleges, disciplines, and communities, catalyzing new initiatives in sustainability research, advocacy, and education while leveraging existing strengths. This project builds upon Rowan University’s strategic pillars (access, affordability, quality, and serving as an economic engine) and furthers our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Successful candidates will demonstrate expertise related to the climate and biodiversity crises in one or more of the following areas: environmental justice; education and public engagement including storytelling; public policy and advocacy; discipline-specific sustainability scholarship; and sustainability practice.

As part of this Rowan Catalysts for Sustainability hiring initiative, the School of Earth and Environment at Rowan University seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor with expertise related to the climate and/or biodiversity crises. The new faculty member will be appointed to one of the three departments contained within the School of Earth and Environment (earth.rowan.edu): the Department of Environmental Science; the Department of Geography, Planning, and Sustainability; or the Department of Geology. Joint appointments, within the school or across the university, will also be entertained where appropriate. 

We seek outstanding candidates with a Ph.D. (completed by September 1, 2023) or equivalent experience in Environmental Science, Geology, Natural Sciences, Physical Geography, Environmental Studies, Environmental Planning, Regenerative Agriculture, Science Communication (related to the school’s mission), or a related field, and we encourage applications from candidates that span the full range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary backgrounds. Successful candidates will be expected to teach courses and lead public-facing outreach efforts that address the physical and human dimensions of the global environmental crises. Furthermore, successful candidates will be expected to participate in the Rowan Catalysts for Sustainability Committee through service work, attending committee events, and/or collaborating with other committee members.  Candidates will be expected to develop and maintain an active, highly visible, extramurally funded research program with outstanding scholarship, and to demonstrate excellence in mentoring both graduate and undergraduate students.  

We seek scholars at the forefront of advancing our understanding of the climate crisis, and/or the biodiversity crisis, and/or human interaction with related environmental systems, who have a demonstrated commitment to effective and innovative outreach on these topics. The successful candidates will have superior communication skills and will have demonstrated a deep commitment to sharing their scholarship with the public. As part of teaching and outreach, School of Earth and Environment faculty are encouraged to develop community science and field-based teaching experiences in the nearby Edelman Fossil Park and affiliated Scotland Run Park. This position is designed to be outward facing; we are seeking dedicated agents of change, and a willingness to work with governments, NGOs, and industry to solve real-world problems.

  • Analyze data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Diviner Lunar Radiometer Experiment to assess the compositional, space weathering, and thermophysical properties of the lunar surface.
  • Acquire thermal infrared spectra of minerals and mineral mixtures in a simulated lunar environment to enable more quantitative interpretation of Diviner data.
  • Collaborate with the PI and Diviner Co-investigators to apply results to analysis of orbital remote sensing data. 
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals based on this work.
  • Evaluate results within the framework of current understanding of the field, as determined by periodical/literature search.

Come work on the origin and provenance of lunar volatiles using the Peregrine Ion-Trap Mass Spectrometer (PITMS) on Astrobotic’s Peregrine Mission-1 and the Mass Spectrometer observing lunar operations (MSolo) on the VIPER mission. You will work on this research using a combination of modeling volatile sources and isotopic signatures, data analysis from these instruments, and collaborating with datasets from other instruments. You will gain hands-on experience by participating in the flight operation of these instruments to collect, analyze, and archive data. You will be expected to present results at appropriate conferences and in peer-reviewed publications. To increase the scientific return from its space science missions, the European Space Agency (ESA) welcomes applications from scientists interested in pursuing research projects based on data publicly available in the ESA Space Science Archives (https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/esdc).

The ESA Archival Research Visitor Programme is open to scientists, at all career levels, affiliated with institutes in ESA Member States and Collaborating States. Early-career scientists (within 10 years of the PhD) are particularly encouraged to apply. Applications by PhD students are also welcome.

During their stay, visiting scientists will have access to archives and mission specialists for help with the retrieval, calibration, and analysis of archival data. In principle, all areas of space research covered by ESA science missions can be supported.

Residence lasts typically between one and three months, also distributed over multiple visits. Research projects can be carried out at ESAC (Madrid, Spain) and at ESTEC (Noordwijk, Netherlands). To offset the expenses incurred by visitors, ESA covers travel costs from and to the home institution and provides support for lodging expenses and meals.

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Planetary Sciences

The Small Bodies Group in the Department of Astronomy at the University of Maryland, College Park invites applications for up to two Postdoctoral Research Associate positions to work with Tony Farnham and Jessica Sunshine on studies involving the composition and evolution of small bodies in the Solar System.  Specific topics of interest include:

  • Sublimation processes and modeling to investigate the evolution of cometary surfaces.
  • Modeling and/or simulation of granular flows in microgravity environments.
  • Mapping the distribution of organics on Ceres.

Desired skills include experience with the reduction and analysis of spacecraft imaging and spectral data, development and execution of computer simulations, knowledge of spectroscopy, and/or experience in interpreting morphologic features.

The UMD Small Bodies Group specializes in remote sensing observations, both ground-based and space-based, and theoretical modeling, primarily of comets, asteroids, and the Moon. Our group has been involved with multiple spacecraft missions and instrument teams, including Deep Impact, EPOXI, Chandrayaan-1, Dawn, Rosetta, Stardust NExT, Lucy and DART. We are also at the forefront in using current and upcoming facilities to study small bodies, including JWST, TESS, LSST, LDT and numerous other ground-based observatories. UMD also operates the Small Bodies Node of NASA’s Planetary Data System, which maintains all mission data related to small bodies in the Solar System.

The Universities Space Research Association’s Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI), invites applications for postdoctoral fellowships in lunar science and exploration for full-time exempt positions in the Houston, Texas area. The successful candidate will join Dr. David A. Kring and over two dozen other scientists in the Center for Lunar Science and Exploration, which is one of twelve national centers of excellence supported by NASA’s Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute. The Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI), part of the Universities Space Research Association, invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in the area of geochemistry and petrology of extraterrestrial materials.

The successful candidate will work as part of a team of planetary scientists at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The project is funded by NASA to investigate the effect of shock on H mobility in nominally anhydrous minerals and apatite. The work will involve impact shock experiments on geological materials, and their analysis by a variety of in-situ techniques.  Candidates with a strong background in petrology or geochemistry, and preferably experience with H analysis by FTIR or SIMS and shock effects and experimental petrology in minerals and meteorites, are encouraged to apply.

Completion of the PhD by the beginning of the appointment is required. The position would be for one year, with a possible extension to a second year. Upcoming Planetary Science Research Positions at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center

The Heliophysics and Planetary Science Branch at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, plans to offer multiple positions seeking scientists to conduct research and develop applications to solve challenging Planetary Science problems. ESA Project Scientist position for Mars Sample Return mission
