Lowell Observatory invites applications for the position of Deputy Director for Science (DDS). The DDS is responsible for the Observatory’s scientific management and vision. This is a full-time, exempt, employment-at-will position reporting to the Director.  The DDS will be a tenured member of the scientific staff.  The term as DDS is five years, renewable upon mutual agreement with the Director. Salary is based on experience and is set by the Director.

Lowell Observatory is an independent, 501(c)(3) institution that conducts research and outreach in astronomy and planetary science. Founded in 1894 by Percival Lowell, the Observatory operates three sites: its main campus on Mars Hill overlooking Flagstaff, Arizona and two dark sky sites at Anderson Mesa and Happy Jack, 10 and 40 miles from Flagstaff, respectively.  Lowell has an operating budget of approximately $14M and employs a staff of ~125, including a faculty of 15 astronomers and planetary scientists as well as several postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduate research interns.

The faculty’s research expertise includes solar system studies including Pluto and the Kuiper belt, icy moons, occultations, and comets and NEOs; stellar astrophysics including massive star evolution, fundamental stellar parameters, and solar and stellar variations; star formation and exoplanetary systems; galactic structure and evolution; and large-scale structure of the Universe.  In support of its research programs, Lowell owns and operates several telescopes, including the 4.3-meter Lowell Discovery Telescope (LDT) and the 1.1-meter John Hall telescope. Partners in the LDT include Boston University, the University of Maryland, the University of Toledo, Northern Arizona University, and Yale University. Lowell also operates the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer (NPOI) under a contract from the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and in partnership with NRL and the United States Naval Observatory (USNO). With a maximum baseline of 437 m, the NPOI is presently undergoing a multi-million-dollar upgrade that will substantially increase its sensitivity and scientific potential. Faculty collaborate extensively in the rich scientific environment of Flagstaff, including with staff at the NAU Department of Astronomy and Planetary Science, the USNO Flagstaff Station, and the astrogeology branch of the United States Geological Survey.

The principal responsibility of the DDS is to manage and implement the scientific goals and vision of the Observatory, in close collaboration with the faculty and scientific staff. The Science Master Plan and the Strategic Plan, both of which are developed by staff and approved by the Trustee and the Director, capture many of the ways this will be pursued. The DDS will lead periodic reviews of these plans to maintain and evolve them as needed, and the DDS will work with all Observatory senior management to ensure the science vision is correctly integrated and prioritized within the Observatory’s overall Strategic Plan. The DDS also acts as the principal source of support and assistance for the faculty, including mentoring of faculty on the tenure track, providing letters of support for individuals and for proposals, managing hiring of tenure-track astronomers, and overseeing 3-year and 6-year tenure reviews.

Postdoctoral Associate – Near-Earth Object Studies

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position at Lowell Observatory to work on the physical characterization of near-Earth objects. This position will be supervised by Dr. Nicholas Moskovitz.

The initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of annual extensions in the case of satisfactory performance. The position is expected to be split with 80% of the time dedicated to the main program and 20% for any other research of the postdoc’s choosing. The start date is negotiable. This position is funded by active NASA grants and comes with a competitive salary with full benefits. Funding is available for computer resources, attending conferences, publication charges, and observing runs. Postdocs at the Observatory have access to our 4.3m Lowell Discovery Telescope (LDT) as well as several 1-m class telescopes. RESPONSIBILITIES

The postdoctoral associate will work in collaboration with Dr. Moskovitz and other project team members on the ongoing Mission Accessible Near-Earth Object Survey (MANOS). This survey is working to achieve comprehensive characterization for newly discovered NEOs using astrometric, photometric, and spectroscopic techniques. Observations will be conducted at a range of facilities including Gemini North and South, the SOAR 4m, Lowell’s 4.3m LDT, and NASA’s IRTF. In addition, the MANOS team is working to develop new software tools that will facilitate rapid target selection, observation, and data dissemination.

The postdoc will contribute to some combination of the following tasks:

— Target management.

— Conducting regular telescopic observations (approximately 1 night per month), either remotely or on site.

— Managing observations at queue-mode facilities.

— Astrometric, photometric, and/or spectroscopic data reduction and analysis.

— Software development in support of target selection, observations, and/or data curation.

— Leading publications relevant to this work.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS

The postdoctoral associate should have experience with observations and analysis of data specific to minor planets.

Strong programming skills are highly desired. Experience with the Python programming language is preferred.

Regular meetings with project team members are expected, but in general the postdoc will be expected to work independently.  They must be able to prioritize tasks, set schedules, troubleshoot problems, and complete complex tasks on time and within deadlines. 

The postdoc is expected to reflect the professional and collegial environment the Observatory strives to maintain.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

A PhD in physics, astronomy, planetary science, or a closely related field is required by the start date.

Fellows are afforded the opportunity to construct and pursue an independent research program in an energetic and diverse research environment.  The

Are you interested in making a difference to promote structural change in research Astronomy and Astrophysics?

The NSF’s NOIRLab in Tucson, AZ, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work with astronomers and a larger advisory team to improve diversity and inclusion in astronomy and astrophysics research. Applicants from a variety of backgrounds are welcome to apply, e.g. astronomy, social science, physics, cultural anthropology, career development.   The successful candidate will lead the effort to create a database of inclusive collaborative practice that will be used to both inform and evaluate proposals for telescope time allocation and other resources from the astronomy community.    The database will be developed through review and evaluation of current good practices in astronomy and other STEM collaboration efforts, as well as, the integration of good practice examples from the literature. This database will support the Research Inclusion Initiative (RII) to be introduced as a part of the process for allocating time through the US Extremely Large Telescope Program (ELTP).

Project Description:

The Research Inclusion Initiative (RII) will support research participation of the broadest US astronomical community by specifically addressing the concerns of researchers at small and underserved institutions interested in participating in US ELTP. This program is envisioned to award telescope observing time to science collaborations, through a peer-review proposal process.

The US ELTP RII will focus on 4 primary areas of inclusion that support:

  • Policies and procedures that enable and encourage mutually beneficial partnerships
  • Opportunities for scientific networking and collaboration building
  • Technical infrastructure that enables broad participation in research
  • Science platform and other infrastructure training and support NSF funding for the development of the RII focuses primarily on preparing the astronomy community to understand and engage in novel policies and procedures that will be required as part of telescope time and other resource awards through this initiative. The RII will also expose the community to good practices around networking and collaboration to prepare them to write successful proposals.

Functional Duties:

The successful candidate will be an active partner in collaboration with the NOIRLab staff sponsor, Dara Norman, and an advisory team, in leading the effort to produce the main deliverables of the Research Inclusion Initiative development project. These are

  • A review of current practice within astronomy, astrophysics and other scientific collaborations, as well as, information on their efficacy for positive and improved science and team outcomes.
  • A database (toolkit) of examples of good practice that embody the concepts of mutually beneficial partnerships and a list of metrics to monitor how these practices function within any given collaboration.
  • Recommendations and guidelines for reviewing and ranking collaboration practices within scientific proposals.
  • Recommendations and guidelines for effective support of scientific networking and collaboration building meetings and workshops.
  • Stretch goal: Recommendations for effective science platform training activities.
  • Other duties as assigned

Additional Opportunities/ Benefits:

The successful candidate will be able to devote up to 50% of their time to supporting their own research program either as part of the RII or in addition to the required functional duties.   Travel Budget includes funds for travel to allow the candidate to present their own research, as well as collect and present work on the RII toolkit project.
