    The Department of Geosciences is part of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) and, along with the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (EESI), houses top-ranked research programs in geology, geophysics, geobiology, geochemistry, and interdisciplinary Earth systems research. Penn State’s Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics is home to similarly strong and relevant exoplanet research. Building on decades of involvement with NASA’s Astrobiology Program, Penn State recently formed the Consortium for Planetary and Exoplanetary Science and Technology, including the Planetary System Science Center (PSSC), as part of a commitment to expanding research in the planetary sciences. The successful candidate will be part of this growing and interdisciplinary community with opportunities for service and leadership to shape the future of the planetary fields and interdisciplinary research at Penn State. The position is a co-hire between the Department of Geosciences and EESI.

     

    Responsibilities

    We seek a colleague who will develop a vigorous and externally funded research program, advance undergraduate and graduate education by teaching courses and providing research training, and work to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the geosciences.

     

    Qualifications

    The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in a relevant field by the time of hire. While any and all areas of Planetary Science expertise are appropriate for this position, Penn State aims to expand involvement in the exploration of the solar system through NASA or international space missions.  Connections to solar system exploration include a wide range of disciplines and research approaches, such as laboratory experimentation, analog research, computational research, remote sensing, instrument development, or through mission science team participation and leadership.

Lowell Observatory invites applications for one or more tenure-track positions in astronomy or planetary science. We seek to add early-career scientists with a strong potential to enhance research at Lowell Observatory. Our scientists are free to pursue research projects of their choice; while they typically bring in a large fraction of their salary through grants, these positions are not contingent upon external funding.

Current research at Lowell Observatory spans a wide range of disciplines from planetary science and exoplanets to stellar astrophysics, Galactic and extragalactic astronomy as well as instrumentation. Staff have access to the full range of resources of the Observatory, including the 4.3-m Lowell Discovery Telescope (LDT), the Naval Precision Optical Interferometer (NPOI), several 1-m class telescopes, the Astrophysical Materials Lab at Northern Arizona University, and our instrumentation and engineering resources. Lowell offers numerous opportunities to work with undergraduate and graduate students from nearby Northern Arizona University as well as other universities around the country and the world. Lowell’s new Astronomy Discovery Center, which will open in 2024, and the award-winning Native American Astronomy Outreach Program offer additional opportunities for staff to engage in science communication as part of the observatory’s education and public outreach mission.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in astronomy, planetary science, or a related field and have demonstrated a potential for independent research and for acquiring external funding. Applicants will be assessed according to their scientific potential, their potential to complement and enhance science at Lowell Observatory, and their potential to acquire external funds. Interest in science communication and in engaging the public in astronomy and planetary science is a plus.

Driving in winter conditions on mountain roads is to be expected.  The position may include periods of night-time work.  Our telescope facilities are located 15-45 miles outside of Flagstaff.

Mount Holyoke College invites applications for a one-year, full-time visiting lecturer position beginning Fall 2022 in Astronomy and Physics. Duration of appointment may be extended. Teaching responsibilities will be two courses in introductory physics and three courses in some combination of introductory astronomy, cosmology, and introductory astrophysics. Mount Holyoke College is an active member of the Five College Astronomy Department, which provides multiple opportunities for research collaborations.
