Position Description:

The Nonproliferation and National Security Department has an opening for a Post Doc to assist with the development of remote sensing algorithms to monitor uranium mining activities.  The development of the algorithms will be based on new, high-quality laboratory spectral data that will be acquired as part of an international multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary effort. The position will require close collaboration with the partner institutions.  This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, test, and validate machine-learning image processing and analysis methods
  • Participate in a multi-institutional proof-of-concept study
  • Maintain spectral data base and upload data to community spectral data bases
  • Assist in and help coordinate experimental work to collect laboratory spectral data

The position is based at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York (Long Island) and the selected candidate will work closely with project team members at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, NY at Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Israel.

IPAC at the California Institute of Technology is soliciting applications for an Applied Data Scientist to work on the Near Earth Object (NEO) Surveyor program. NEO Surveyor is a NASA Planetary Defense mission that will launch in early 2026. The NEO Surveyor observatory consists of a passively cooled 50 cm telescope located at Sun-Earth L1 equipped with a wide-field camera that will image the sky simultaneously in two mid-infrared bands. Operations will be optimized to detect, track, and characterize Near Earth Objects (NEOs) and more distant small bodies in the solar system. NEO Surveyor will detect approximately 100,000 Main Belt Asteroids, NEOs, and comets each day against a background of tens of millions of distant stars and galaxies.

IPAC is developing and will operate the Survey Data System (NSDS) for NEO Surveyor that ingests raw data from the flight system, processes those data into calibrated image and source detection products, performs automated searches for moving solar system objects, assesses the quality of the survey data, and distributes data products to NASA archives and the user community. The NSDS will make use of machine learning based automated classifiers in several key steps including differentiation between real and spurious detections of moving object candidates, identification of reliable moving object tracklet candidates, and identification of comet candidates in the moving object detection stream.

The Colorado School of Mines Department of Geophysics invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher in 3D imaging of the Mars ice caps using orbital radar data.

The successful candidate’s responsibilities will consist of developing custom radar processing and imaging software, as well as the processing of large 3D data volumes obtained from Mars orbiters equipped with radar systems (SHARAD and MARSIS). We seek an outstanding individual holding a Ph.D. in geophysics, (electrical) engineering, or a related discipline with demonstrated

– experience with orbital radar instrumentation and data processing;

– experience with large scale numerical modeling, imaging, and inversion;

– excellent programming skills in C++ and Python, or equivalent languages;

– experience with high-performance distributed computing.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah, invites applications for potentially three faculty positions to begin August 2020. The new faculty members will be expected to provide excellent teaching and research mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The BYU Department of Physics and Astronomy operates a number of telescope facilities. The West Mountain Observatory operates three telescopes ranging from 0.32-m to 0.92-m atop a 6,850 ft mountain with reasonably dark skies. The campus observatory is made up of six robotic telescopes ranging from 0.13-m to 0.6-m. Our ROVOR facility contains an 0.5-m robotic/remote telescope. In addition, we have a significant number of nodes on the campus supercomputer which can be used for computational efforts. Finally, we operate a 119 seat planetarium that is used for education and outreach.

The Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (EOAS) at the University of British Columbia invites applicants for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in the Geophysics and Planetary Geosciences group, which is in the Planetary Sciences Section within the Science Division. This project focuses on changes in dust devil tracks over time in order to measure dust settling timescales, amounts, and rates on Mars. In addition, other projects of the candidate’s choosing are also possible, for example involving geomorphology and/or active processes (aeolian, impacts, mass-wasting, etc.) on planetary bodies, especially Mars. Dr. Ingrid Daubar will serve as JPL postdoctoral advisor to the selected candidate.

Candidates should have a recent Ph.D. (within 5 years) in Planetary Science, Geology, Astronomy, Physics, Remote Sensing, or a related field.
