Objectives of this Role:
  • Lead novel modeling research while contributing to various ongoing research projects in collaboration with other members of the In Situ Techniques Group.
  • Develop new geochemical and cosmochemical models as foundational science in support of current or future mission work, including Ocean Worlds and origins science.
  • Collaborate with remote sensing and lab studies groups and with the Space Science Division in general on mission activities, observation campaigns, laboratory science, and flight mission/instrumentation/technology development and advancement projects.
  • Disseminate results through active publication in peer-reviewed journals and participation at scientific meetings/conferences.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
  • Lead/execute model development using robust analysis methods in consultation with senior project team members to derive important insights into conditions and processes in extraterrestrial environments relevant to planetary missions.
  • Work closely with a team of scientists, engineers, and graduate students while executing fundamental and or applied research on ongoing projects.
  • Attend team meetings to inform the group of progress and results through presentations.
  • Develop science or technical requirements for future hardware development projects.
Requirements:
  • Requires a PhD with a 3.00 GPA in Planetary Science, Astronomy, Geological Sciences, Physics, Applied or Engineering Physics, Chemistry, or related fields.
  • 0 years: Acadmeic demonstration of independent research is required
  • Must show potential to develop an independent research program
  • Experience in geochemical or cosmochemical modeling and interpretation, as well as application of mass spectrometry data are beneficial

Rowan University’s newly launched Catalysts for Sustainability program seeks to hire ten new faculty to develop, advance, and communicate solutions to humanity’s most pressing existential threats posed by the climate and biodiversity crises. The university-wide cohort will lead and collaborate across colleges, disciplines, and communities, catalyzing new initiatives in sustainability research, advocacy, and education while leveraging existing strengths. As part of this Rowan Catalysts for Sustainability hiring initiative, the School of Earth and Environment at Rowan University seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor with expertise related to the climate and/or biodiversity crises. The new faculty member will be appointed to one of the three departments contained within the School of Earth and Environment (earth.rowan.edu): the Department of Environmental Science; the Department of Geography, Planning, and Sustainability; or the Department of Geology. Joint appointments, within the school or across the university, will also be entertained where appropriate. 

We seek outstanding candidates with a Ph.D. (completed by September 1, 2023) or equivalent experience in Environmental Science, Geology, Natural Sciences, Physical Geography, Environmental Studies, Environmental Planning, Regenerative Agriculture, Science Communication (related to the school’s mission), or a related field, and we encourage applications from candidates that span the full range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary backgrounds. Successful candidates will be expected to teach courses and lead public-facing outreach efforts that address the physical and human dimensions of the global environmental crises. Furthermore, successful candidates will be expected to participate in the Rowan Catalysts for Sustainability Committee through service work, attending committee events, and/or collaborating with other committee members.  Candidates will be expected to develop and maintain an active, highly visible, extramurally funded research program with outstanding scholarship, and to demonstrate excellence in mentoring both graduate and undergraduate students.  

We seek scholars at the forefront of advancing our understanding of the climate crisis, and/or the biodiversity crisis, and/or human interaction with related environmental systems, who have a demonstrated commitment to effective and innovative outreach on these topics. The successful candidates will have superior communication skills and will have demonstrated a deep commitment to sharing their scholarship with the public. As part of teaching and outreach, School of Earth and Environment faculty are encouraged to develop community science and field-based teaching experiences in the nearby Edelman Fossil Park and affiliated Scotland Run Park. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, invites applications for a newly created research position in the Planetary and Exoplanetary Atmospheres Group. The research will involve investigations with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) for science planning and analysis tasks involving the Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) instrument. A scientist is particularly needed to plan special observations on a campaign basis, such as coordinated observations with other spacecraft experiments. The successful candidate will be part of the Mars Climate Sounder team. Scientific analysis will be focused on cloud observations by the MCS, using radiative-transfer programs to determine the composition of clouds in the atmosphere of Mars. The research will also entail management and maintenance of the citizen-science project ‘Cloudspotting on Mars’ on the ‘Zooniverse’ platform that enables the identification of clouds in MCS data by citizen scientists. This work involves both data management/analysis and interactions with citizen scientists via online communications and webinars. In addition, the successful candidate will support the Mars Sample Return Program office on risk reduction efforts such as optical search scenario modeling.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct science planning activities and operational support for science observations by the Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) onboard Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), in particular, special observations on campaign basis such as coordinated observations with other Mars-based assets, as well as quality control and low-level analyses of science observations and data.
  • Conduct scientific analyses of cloud observations at Mars by MCS, investigate the altitude distribution and geographic location of cloud occurrence in relation to other atmospheric parameters, perform radiative transfer calculations in order to determine the composition of Mars clouds, and publish results in relevant scientific journals.
  • Manage and maintain an ongoing citizen science project that enables the identification of clouds in MCS data by citizen scientists, prepare and upload new data to the citizen-science platform, perform analyses on the resulting identifications, and interact with citizen scientists through online communications and webinars.
  • Support the Mars Sample Return Program office on risk reduction efforts, including optical experiments with the MRO orbital navigation camera, Earth Return Orbiter narrow angle camera sensitivity assessments, and optical search scenario modeling.

 

The following qualifications are required:

  • PhD in planetary or atmospheric science or related scientific discipline.
  • Knowledge of Mars’ lower and upper atmosphere as well as its radiometric environment
  • Experience and capability in conducting Mars atmospheric research as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations
  • Demonstrated experience with citizen-science methods
  • Demonstrated experience with data science analysis methods
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

The following qualifications are preferred:

  • 3+ years of post-doctoral experience is strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with the Mars Climate Sounder investigation
  • Familiarity with other current Mars missions, in particular with respect to atmospheric investigations conducted by them

To increase the scientific return from its space science missions, the European Space Agency (ESA) welcomes applications from scientists interested in pursuing research projects based on data publicly available in the ESA Space Science Archives (https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/esdc).

The ESA Archival Research Visitor Programme is open to scientists, at all career levels, affiliated with institutes in ESA Member States and Collaborating States. Early-career scientists (within 10 years of the PhD) are particularly encouraged to apply. Applications by PhD students are also welcome.

During their stay, visiting scientists will have access to archives and mission specialists for help with the retrieval, calibration, and analysis of archival data. In principle, all areas of space research covered by ESA science missions can be supported.

Residence lasts typically between one and three months, also distributed over multiple visits. Research projects can be carried out at ESAC (Madrid, Spain) and at ESTEC (Noordwijk, Netherlands). To offset the expenses incurred by visitors, ESA covers travel costs from and to the home institution and provides support for lodging expenses and meals.

The XCP-8 (Applied Computational Physics, Verification and Analysis) group at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) seeks a post-doctoral candidate in the area of numerical modeling for planetary sciences, with an emphasis on continuum-scale modeling of bolides, airbursts, and their atmospheric effects, using radiation hydrodynamics codes and high-performance computing resources, to model airbursts like the 1908 Tunguska event and the 2014 Chelyabinsk event. This work will be done as a part of the LANL Planetary Defense team, under the mentorship of Dr. Cathy Plesko and Dr. Mark Boslough. A successful candidate will test, verify, and validate (as appropriate) relevant physics models and may extend, develop, and/or implement needed physics models within the Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) code base in order to carry out the airburst simulations. The successful candidate will be expected to work in a team environment, to test computational physics models in large production software, publish the research in peer-reviewed journals, and present work at international conferences.
