Description

The Hampton University (HU) Department of Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (APS) invites nominations and applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Planetary Science, at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to begin August 2023.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution. HU established the Center for Atmospheric Science (CAS) in 1996, which led to creation of the Department of Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences in 2007.  APS offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the fields of Atmospheric Science and Planetary Science. This program has established a reputation of excellence in education, outreach and research, with particular emphasis on satellite applications for atmospheric studies.

Duties and Responsibilities

 

The successful candidate will continue and advance the groundbreaking work of CAS and APS. This work includes building a portfolio of externally funded, high-profile research in the field of atmospheric science and recruiting, supporting, and advising masters and doctoral students. The successful candidates will also teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Objectives of the APS department include continuation of research excellence at HU in atmospheric and planetary science, expanded capacity for research, and growth in enrollment in the graduate program.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Planetary Science or a related field is required.  The successful applicant will sustain existing programs and enable future strategic growth of the department in the following area:

Satellite-based remote sensing of planetary atmospheres and/or surfaces (including Earth), with demonstrated capability and commitment to developing new satellite instruments, planetary missions, and data analysis techniques.

Salary will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and accomplishments in the field.

Postdoctoral position in laboratory planetary science/astrophysics

​The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a postdoctoral position in laboratory astrophysics/planetary science. The postdoc would work with Assistant Professor Dr. Xinting Yu on performing material characterization using a newly-constructed Planetary Material Characterization Facility at UTSA. The successful applicant would have the opportunity to work with a range of material characterization instrumentation, including but not limited to nanoindentation, ellipsometry, and atomic force microscopy, work on projects to measure various material properties of planetary materials including planetary aerosol analogs, field samples, meteorites, planetary regolith analogs, and potentially return samples, and apply the material properties to understand various atmospheric/surface processes on planetary bodies in and outside the Solar System. Prior experience with material characterization, laboratory astrophysics, or planetary science is preferred. The candidate must have a Ph.D. in astronomy, planetary science, geophysics, materials science, or a related field by the start date of the position. 

The appointment will be for 2 years, with a possibility of a one-year extension contingent upon performance and funding – with benefits and research support. The expected start date is Fall 2023 and is negotiable.

​The University of Maryland Department of Astronomy invites applications for a postdoctoral associate position in the study of exoplanet atmospheres. The postdoctoral associate would work with Assistant Professor Thaddeus Komacek on projects focused on developing three-dimensional atmospheric circulation models of exoplanets and applying them to interpret observations.  The successful applicant would have the opportunity to work on projects including but not limited to studying the radiative feedback due to mineral clouds on the atmospheric dynamics of hot and ultra-hot Jupiters, the influence of magnetic fields on their thermal structure and deep dynamics, and the coupling of interior evolution models to atmospheric circulation models. Prior experience with general circulation models and familiarity with observational characterization of exoplanets is preferred. The candidate must have a Ph.D in astronomy, planetary science, geophysics, or a related field by the start date of the position. 

The appointment will be for two years, with continuation for one more year contingent on performance and the availability of funding. The expected start date is Fall 2023, and is negotiable. As part of this Rowan Catalysts for Sustainability hiring initiative, the School of Earth and Environment at Rowan University seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor with expertise related to the climate and/or biodiversity crises. The new faculty member will be appointed to one of the three departments contained within the School of Earth and Environment (earth.rowan.edu): the Department of Environmental Science; the Department of Geography, Planning, and Sustainability; or the Department of Geology. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, invites applications for a newly created research position in the Planetary and Exoplanetary Atmospheres Group. The research will involve investigations with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) for science planning and analysis tasks involving the Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) instrument. A scientist is particularly needed to plan special observations on a campaign basis, such as coordinated observations with other spacecraft experiments. The successful candidate will be part of the Mars Climate Sounder team. Scientific analysis will be focused on cloud observations by the MCS, using radiative-transfer programs to determine the composition of clouds in the atmosphere of Mars. The research will also entail management and maintenance of the citizen-science project ‘Cloudspotting on Mars’ on the ‘Zooniverse’ platform that enables the identification of clouds in MCS data by citizen scientists. This work involves both data management/analysis and interactions with citizen scientists via online communications and webinars. In addition, the successful candidate will support the Mars Sample Return Program office on risk reduction efforts such as optical search scenario modeling.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct science planning activities and operational support for science observations by the Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) onboard Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), in particular, special observations on campaign basis such as coordinated observations with other Mars-based assets, as well as quality control and low-level analyses of science observations and data.
  • Conduct scientific analyses of cloud observations at Mars by MCS, investigate the altitude distribution and geographic location of cloud occurrence in relation to other atmospheric parameters, perform radiative transfer calculations in order to determine the composition of Mars clouds, and publish results in relevant scientific journals.
  • Manage and maintain an ongoing citizen science project that enables the identification of clouds in MCS data by citizen scientists, prepare and upload new data to the citizen-science platform, perform analyses on the resulting identifications, and interact with citizen scientists through online communications and webinars.
  • Support the Mars Sample Return Program office on risk reduction efforts, including optical experiments with the MRO orbital navigation camera, Earth Return Orbiter narrow angle camera sensitivity assessments, and optical search scenario modeling.

 

The following qualifications are required:

  • PhD in planetary or atmospheric science or related scientific discipline.
  • Knowledge of Mars’ lower and upper atmosphere as well as its radiometric environment
  • Experience and capability in conducting Mars atmospheric research as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations
  • Demonstrated experience with citizen-science methods
  • Demonstrated experience with data science analysis methods
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

The following qualifications are preferred:

  • 3+ years of post-doctoral experience is strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with the Mars Climate Sounder investigation
  • Familiarity with other current Mars missions, in particular with respect to atmospheric investigations conducted by them
  • Experience in obtaining grant funding as demonstrated by success in competitive proposal calls
