Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Scholar position at the University of California, Riverside (UCR). The successful applicant will work in the Astrobiology Center as a member of a group led by Dr. Stephen Kane. The primary research activities in this group cover a broad range of exoplanet and astrobiology topics, including planetary science, exoplanet detection, characterization, orbital dynamics, atmospheres, and habitability. Typical data sources used within the research group are Kepler, Keck, Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), the Automated Planet Finder (APF), MINERVA-Australis, the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR), and various ground-based photometric telescopes. The Postdoctoral Scholar will also be encouraged to pursue their own research program and collaborate in the various astrobiology research programs being undertaken in the UCR Astrobiology Center.

Candidates must hold a PhD in astronomy, physics, planetary sciences, or related field before their start date. Experience in the fields of exoplanetary and/or planetary science is preferred. The position is for one year with expected renewals for a second and third year contingent upon satisfactory research performance. The salary is competitive, and health benefits are provided.

3 POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS IN MARS SCIENCE

The Department of Planetology and Habitability at the Centro de Astrobiología (CAB) invites applications for three postdoctoral positions to support investigations on the nature of the early Mars environments. We are seeking enthusiastic and excellent candidates to join a planetary science team funded by the European Research Council (ERC), working with Dr. Alberto Fairén in the Project “MarsFirstWater” (ERC Consolidator Grant) broadening the efforts of the Project “icyMARS” (ERC Starting Grant).

Applicants should have a recent Ph.D. in the field of Planetary Science or related discipline, and a background in Mars research. Expertise in Geomorphology/Sedimentology, Geochemistry, and Microbiology, respectively for each of the positions, is required.

The 3 positions, placed in Madrid, would be for two years, with possible extension to a third year contingent upon satisfactory performance. USRA/LPI Postdoctoral Fellow in Planetary Surface Processes

The Universities Space Research Association’s Lunar and Planetary Institute invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow in modeling of planetary surface processes.

The successful candidate will join Dr. Edgard Rivera-Valentín in several projects related to simulating planetary surface process on Mars and the icy moons of Saturn. Projects are interdisciplinary in nature and involve numerical simulations of planetary surface processes and responsibilities in spacecraft data analysis and data management. Applicants should have a recent Ph.D. in planetary science, astronomy, physics, geosciences or a related field. Experience in numerical modeling and proficiency in programming languages is required; experience with MATLAB and IDL is desirable. Candidates with demonstrated experience in a wide array of subfields in planetary science are encouraged to apply. Candidates from underrepresented groups in STEM and those with a demonstrated history of efforts to improve diversity and inclusion in STEM are particularly encouraged.

The European Space Agency awards several postdoctoral fellowships each year.

The aim of these fellowships is to provide young scientists, holding a PhD
or the equivalent degree, with the means of performing space science
research in fields related to the ESA Science Programmes.

Areas of research include planetary science, astronomy and
astrophysics, solar and solar-terrestrial science, plasma physics and
fundamental physics. The fellowships have a duration of two years, with the
possible extension to three years, and are
tenable at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in
Noordwijk, Netherlands, or at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) in
Villafranca del Castillo, near Madrid, Spain.

Applications are now solicited for fellowships in space science to begin in
the fall of 2018. Preference will be given to applications submitted by
candidates within five years of receiving their PhD. Candidates not holding
a PhD yet are encouraged to apply, but they must provide evidence of
receiving their degree before starting the fellowship.

ESA fellows are enrolled in ESA’s Social Security Scheme, which covers
medical expenses. A monthly deduction covers these short-term and long-term risks.

The deadline for applications is 2 October 2017.

Columbia University: 2-year Postdoctoral Research Scientist appointment to model planetary atmospheric chemistry and aerosol processes in a general circulation model.

The successful candidate will join a team from the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), GSFC, Columbia University, and other institutions as part of the Nexus for Exoplanet System Science (https://nexss.info). Team research addresses the habitability of past Solar System and exoplanet climates and informs exoplanet mission design. The candidate will be expected to perform original research, present results at scientific meetings, and publish first-author peer-reviewed papers. The candidate will be resident at NASA GISS in New York City.

Requirements:  PhD. in atmospheric science, chemistry, planetary science, astrobiology, or a similar field. Expertise in atmospheric chemistry and willingness to become involved in chemistry-aerosol parameterization development are required, but the broad scope of the project allows for many possible research directions and collaborations in studying atmospheric composition impacts on a variety of climates using the model.
