To increase the scientific return from its space science missions, the European Space Agency (ESA) welcomes applications from scientists interested in pursuing research projects based on data publicly available in the ESA Space Science Archives (https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/esdc).

The ESA Archival Research Visitor Programme is open to scientists, at all career levels, affiliated with institutes in ESA Member States and Collaborating States. ESA’s postdoctoral Research Fellowship programme offers early career scientists and engineers the possibility to carry out research in a variety of disciplines related to space science, space applications or space technology. Research Fellowships in Space Science specifically offer the opportunity to contribute to ESA’s endeavour to explore our Solar System and the Universe, and cover the fields of heliophysics, planetary science, astrophysics and fundamental physics. 

The research fellowships offer a unique insight into ESA’s environment and activities while conducting cutting edge research. Mentoring and training opportunities are available, as are possibilities to engage with ESA science-related activities (e.g., archive/data science, operations, calibration, communication, citizen science). 

Approximately 12 ESA Fellowships in Space Science (SCI) will be offered this year, to join the pool of about 25 Research Fellows. Within the Science Directorate (SCI), we welcome all independent proposals for innovative research associated with one or more of our missions. The Space Science fellowships can be taken up at any of the three sites ESAC (Spain), ESTEC (Netherlands) or STScI (USA) and we encourage applicants to choose sites that allow for best local collaborations. European Research Council funded post-doctoral position in geophysics/planetary physics to model volatile loss processes occurring during planetary growth

Position.  The BGI, University of Bayreuth, Germany, is seeking a candidate for a post-doctoral position to numerically model volatile loss processes occurring during planetary growth. The work will focus on describing the formation of vapour above magma and escape of this vapour from the gravitational influence of growing planetary objects, and integrating chemical fractionation during these processes.

The position is part of a project that seeks to quantify the role of volatile loss during planetary growth and is funded by European Research Council Starting Grant Vaploss. As such, the candidate will become part of a team of two post-doctoral researchers who will work jointly with the PI (Dr. Remco Hin) on the project.

The position is funded for 2 years. The salary will be based on grade E13 TV-L of the pay scale for the German public sector.

Working environment.  The BGI has a long history of research into Earth and planetary sciences, including chemical and physical aspects of planetary accretion. This environment provides the candidate with ample opportunity for collaborations, which will be encouraged.

The project further consists of a close collaboration with Prof. Francis Nimmo (University of California Santa Cruz) on modelling volatile loss mechanisms, with Dr. Zoe Leinhardt (University of Bristol) on planetary growth models, and with Prof. G. Golabek (BGI) on heat inputs during planetary accretion.

Application requirements.  The candidate should hold a PhD in a relevant field and preferably have post-doctoral experience. Good mathematical skills and communication skills in English are desirable, as is the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.

The Space Plasma Group at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP), University of Colorado, Boulder (CU)

On behalf of the NASA Astrophysics Division, the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) announces the call for applications for postdoctoral fellowships under the NASA Hubble Fellowship Program (NHFP) beginning in the fall of 2021.

The NHFP supports postdoctoral scientists performing independent research that contributes to NASA Astrophysics (see https://science.nasa.gov/astrophysics/ for more information). The research may be theoretical, observational, and/or instrumental. If your application is successful and you accept our offer, you will become an Einstein, Hubble or Sagan fellow depending on the area of your research. We are continuing the legacy of those three earlier programs in this way, and through joint management of the program by STScI, in collaboration with the Chandra X-ray Center and the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute.

The NHFP is open to applicants of any nationality who have earned (or will have earned) their doctoral degree on or after January 1, 2018 in astronomy, physics or related disciplines. The duration of the Fellowship is up to three years: an initial one-year appointment, and two annual renewals contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of NASA funds. Eligibility may extend to those who received their PhD as early as January 1, 2017, if professional work was necessarily delayed by personal or family considerations. Extended eligibility must be justified in an email to [email protected] at least 2 weeks in advance of the application deadline.

We anticipate offering up to 24 NHFP Fellowships this year. The Fellowships are tenable at a U.S. host institution of the fellow’s choice, subject to a maximum of two new fellows per host institution per year, and no more than five fellows at any single host institution, except for short periods of overlap.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Collaborating with the Principal Investigator Jeffrey Gillis-Davis (Physics) and co-investigators Bradley L. Jolliff and Alian Wang (EPS) to develop and conduct research projects on space weathering. Tasks include experiment design, conduct space weathering simulation experiments, data collection, data analysis, communication of experiment results, and data archiving.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develop hypotheses to be tested related to space weathering and devise ways of testing these hypotheses.  Acquire, assemble, and perform analyses of data and interpret results. Analysis of experiment products using a range of analysis methods including SEM, TEM, EPMA, laser Raman spectroscopy, and UV-VIS-IR spectroscopy. Manage research projects in collaboration with other SSERVI institutions and investigators.
  2. Work with principal investigator and co-investigators to assist with building experimental set ups, design of research protocols, conducting research, and developing procedures for the collection, verification, and management of data.
  3. Write conference abstracts and present science results.  Prepare and submit peer-reviewed manuscripts on research results/finding.  Submit regular progress reports based on research work to PI and present progress Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute (SSERVI) peers.
  4. Solve practical problems relating to difficulties with equipment or instruments. Suggest technical or procedural improvements in testing methods. Comply with established safety procedures and maintaining required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
  5. Archive data acquired/assembled during research task.
  6. Conduct literature searches and background reading related to research project.
  7. Assist with grant preparation and reporting. May submit grant proposals as Science-PI with the approval of the PI.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

PhD. in related planetary science field (physics, chemistry, geology).

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD. in related planetary science field with at least one year of research experience and lab operations.
  • Analytical, reasoning and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret multiple forms of data (e.g., spectral, chemical, electron probe).
  • Computer literacy including the ability to use a variety of software packages to analyze data and programming.
  • Ability to communicate in oral and written form in a clear, concise manner.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of standard laboratory policies, procedures, and equipment.
  • Must be able to work well independently or as a team member and to communicate data.
