Postdoctoral Scholar, Exoplanet Habitability

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral scholar position in astronomy at the University of California, Irvine. The postdoctoral researcher will work with Prof. Aomawa Shields at UCI on climate modeling studies of potentially habitable exoplanets, including systems discovered by NASA’s Kepler mission, the upcoming Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), and other space- and ground-based observatories. Desirable qualifications include experience with computer climate modeling; a research background in atmospheric or planetary science; strong written and oral communication skills; and an ability to work well in a collaborative environment.

The appointment can begin in summer 2018, with a negotiable starting date. The initial appointment will be for one year, with a possibility of extension to longer terms contingent upon availability of funds and successful performance. Job Description

USRA is an independent, nonprofit research corporation where the combined efforts of in-house talent and university-based expertise merge to advance space science and technology. USRA works across disciplines including biomedicine, planetary science, astrophysics, and engineering and integrates those competencies into applications ranging from fundamental research to facility management and operations. USRA engages the creativity and authoritative expertise of the research community to develop and deliver sophisticated, forward-looking solutions to Federal agencies and other customers – on schedule and within budget.

 

USRA is seeking a full-time Student Researcher for the SOFIA program in Mountain View, CA. The Student Researcher will be modeling the Spectral Energy Distribution (SEDs) using analytic and radiative transfer models. The task is to explore the limits of each modeling approach and extract the parameters that can be reliably derived from the SED modeling. The goal is to classify the sources based on their SEDs and possibly tie the classification to the different evolutionary stages of massive star formation.

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Compile ages for the selected star forming regions
  • Analyze the results of modeling the SEDs using the Robitaille models and the semi-analytic SED model by Chakrabarti al., especially compare model parameters to published ages of the respective star forming regions
  • Explore limits of the SED modeling incl. parameter uncertainties, degeneracies, and relevance
  • Software development as required for the above steps

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support the PI in conducting the research project
  • Ensure the protection of NASA and USRA intellectual property with respect to commercial and ITAR/EAR concerns through disclosures, patent applications, and adherence to NASA’s scientific and technical information dissemination guidelines.
  • Support efforts of USRA Management to ensure that USRA conducts its business operations in an effective, cost-competitive, and professional manner
  • Ability to work effectively with co-workers, customers, and supervisor in a professional and courteous manner is an essential function of this position.
  • Complete all trainings as scheduled.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor degree in Astronomy or a related field or equivalent certificate(s) or work experience
  • 2-5 years experience in astronomy
  • Experience with astronomical data reduction using IDL or Python

2017 Exploration Postdoctoral Fellowship in Earth and Space Science

The School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) at Arizona State University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will serve as an Exploration Fellow. The mission of the postdoctoral Fellowship is to foster SESE’s interdisciplinary research program by attracting and supporting outstanding early-career scientists and engineers to pursue independent research in collaboration with SESE faculty. Research areas within SESE encompass astrobiology, astrophysics, cosmology, Earth and planetary science, instrumentation and systems engineering, and science education.

Anticipated start date for the position is July 2017. The expected duration of the Fellowship is three years.  Incoming Fellows will receive an annual stipend of $61,000 with health benefits, plus $9,000 per year in discretionary research funds. A relocation allowance will be provided.

Interested candidates should contact two current faculty members in SESE to discuss potential collaborative research topics and determine whether they would agree to serve as mentors. When a topic of mutual interest between the applicant and potential faculty mentors is identified, the applicant should submit a research proposal that includes: (1) a cover letter identifying the proposed research topic and the names of the two faculty mentors, (2) a current CV, (3) a research proposal not longer than five pages, and (4) two papers exemplifying the applicant’s research. Applicants should arrange for three letters of reference to be submitted separately. Preference will be given to proposals that include interdisciplinary research spanning multiple research areas within SESE.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. by the time of appointment, but received no earlier than 2012, in a field relevant to Earth and Space exploration, including (but not limited to) astrophysics, biology, chemistry, engineering, geology, physics, and planetary science. Applicants who received their Ph.D. prior to 2012 will not be considered.

Desired Qualifications: (1) research proposal that demonstrates relevance, interdisciplinary merit, and/or potential impact of the proposed research activities to the overarching “big picture” research questions in the field and to the mission of SESE, (2) a record of prior achievement and experience demonstrating the potential to accomplish proposed research objectives, and (3) evidence of strong verbal and written communication skills.
