Position Overview:

Duties and Responsibilities

  • As an independent principle investigator, hires, supervises, trains, mentors, and assigns appropriate lab work to undergraduate physics majors and graduate student research assistants.
  • Serves as PhD thesis supervisor to graduate students in either the Computing PhD program (if astrophysics) or the Materials Science & Engineering PhD program (if condensed-matter).
  • Writes and presents papers for publication, conferences, and grant submissions, and mentors research students to do the same.
  • Determines direction of research efforts with deep understanding of current and previous research and scientific literature.
  • Ensures accurate collection and analysis of data gathered in research experiments, and able to interpret data using statistical methodology.
  • Obtains sufficient external funding to independently support research program, lab, and salaries of undergraduate and PhD students.
  • Highly skilled in teaching of both undergraduate and graduate physics courses.
  • Service to the university via committees as assigned by the department chair.

Minimum Qualifications:    

  • PhD and subsequent research experience at the time of application
  • Ability to build a vigorous, externally-funded research program that engages, mentors, and supports both undergraduate physics majors and PhD students in either the Computing (Astrophysics hire) or the Materials Science & Engineering (Condensed-Matter Physics hire) interdisciplinary PhD program at Boise State University
  • Expertise in computing, simulation, and data science.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience carrying out post-doctoral research
  • Strong publication record attesting to a successful research program
  • Experience of leadership and collaboration in scientific research

The American Astronomical Society (AAS) and the Division for Planetary Sciences (DPS) are soliciting applications and nominations of candidates for the position of Editor of The Planetary Science Journal (PSJ). This is a new journal being launched by AAS Publications to serve the planetary science community. The search will be conducted by the DPS Publications Subcommittee and Ethan Vishniac, the current Editor in Chief of the AAS Journals. The Search Committee is looking for candidates that have a record of achievement in planetary science, experience as an author and referee in this field, and a clear vision for the future of the PSJ. Previous editorial experience would be useful but is not required.

This is a part time position. The Editor will be based at their home institution and is expected to devote approximately 20% of their time to managing the PSJ and coordinating peer review of submitted manuscripts.

Furthermore, the Department has strong research and development ties with the staff at the Headquarters of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), which is located on the grounds of the University of Virginia, and the NRAO Central Development Laboratory.

In addition to the observational and instrumentation endeavors, the Department hosts the Virginia Institute for Theoretical Astronomy (VITA) as well as the Virginia Initiative for Cosmic Origins (VICO). 2019 Exploration Fellowship in Earth and Space Science

The School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) at Arizona State University invites applications for the postdoctoral research scholar position of Exploration Fellow. The mission of the postdoctoral fellowship is to foster SESE’s interdisciplinary research program by attracting and supporting outstanding early-career scientists and engineers to pursue independent research in collaboration with SESE faculty. Research areas within SESE encompass theoretical and observational astrophysics, astrobiology, cosmology, earth and planetary science, instrumentation and systems engineering, and science education. Anticipated start date for the position is July 2019.  Incoming Fellows will receive an annual stipend of $65,000 with health benefits, plus $12,000 per year in discretionary research funds.  A relocation allowance will be provided.  The initial appointment is for one year with subsequent annual renewal for up to a total of three years, contingent upon satisfactory performance, the needs of the university, and availability of resources.

Interested candidates should contact two faculty members in SESE to discuss potential collaborative research topics and determine whether they would agree to serve as an Exploration Fellow mentor. When a topic of mutual interest between the applicant and potential faculty mentors is identified, the applicant should submit a research proposal as a single PDF that includes: (1) a cover letter identifying the proposed research topic and the names of the two faculty mentors, (2) a current CV, (3) a research proposal not longer than five pages (including figures and references), and (4) one paper exemplifying the applicant’s research. Applicants should arrange for three letters of reference to be submitted separately. Preference will be given to proposals that include interdisciplinary research spanning multiple research areas within SESE.

Essential duties of the position:  The successful applicant will conduct original research, document results and write journal articles, and present at scientific meetings.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. by the time of appointment in a field relevant to Earth and Space exploration, including (but not limited to) astrophysics, physics, chemistry, geology, biology, and engineering.  Candidates must be within five years from receipt of the doctoral degree.

Desired Qualifications: (1) research proposal that demonstrates relevance, interdisciplinary merit, and/or potential impact of the proposed research activities to the overarching “big picture” research questions in the field and to the mission of SESE, (2) a record of prior achievement and experience demonstrating the potential to accomplish proposed research objectives, (3) evidence of strong verbal and written communication skills.

The Department of the Geophysical Sciences at The University of Chicago invites applications for the T.C. Chamberlin Postdoctoral Fellowship. We seek outstanding scientists who lead creative investigations into the nature of Earth and other planetary bodies–their physics, biology, chemistry, climate, and history–and who have a desire to participate in the broad intellectual life of the Department and the University. We encourage people with interests in any aspect of the Earth and planetary sciences to apply. To give a sense of the diverse interests of our Chamberlin Fellows, in recent years Fellows have included people whose research focuses on the effect of clouds on climate, asteroid impacts, biogeochemical cycling, and petrology/geochronology.
