Student Travel Awards
Grants for students at UK universities to attend DPS2005
Through an award by PPARC to the Royal Astronomical Society, grants to attend DPS2005 are available for students registered on PhD (or other higher degree) courses at universities in the UK.
Note: Students registered in the USA may apply for support as usual through the AAS.
The cost for a student to attend the whole meeting is $145 to register (if registered before 30 June 2005) plus accommodation (student accommodation and most meals for the week in St John’s College cost $580 – see Registration webpage for details). Under this scheme, Student Travel Awards are available for £200, to be applied to the accommodation charge. Students will have to find from other sources the remainder of the charges for the week (say £75 registration and £105 accommodation and meal costs).
There are some further grants available from the conference organisers for £100 towards accommodation costs and a free conference dinner for students willing to act as conference volunteers for the week (Sunday to Friday inclusive). Volunteers will be assigned to duties so that they can attend all conference science sessions.
Preference will be given to:
To apply for a grant, write or e-mail (cut, paste and complete the form below) before 1 July 2005. Please apply as soon as possible if you want your application to be considered before the deadlines of 1 July 2005 for early registration at the conference and for the receipt of an abstract by the Scientific Programme Committee.
If you want to ensure that you are registered for the cheapest possible accommodation at the meeting, you may register and pay for the meeting before the notification of the award in the expectation that you receive one. You may then deduct £200 ($380) from the accommodation charge (note this on the registration form). If you are unsuccessful in obtaining an award, you may elect to pay the additional £200 or to de-register for a refund.
Alternatively you may wait until after the award is given and use it in part payment for the accommodation that you then select, if it is still available.
