Dining Guide

An irreverent sampling of the places that some of us locals like to go to eat. Opinions vary about each of them so all advice should be taken with a grain of salt.

Key: $ = cheap (< $10 for entrees), $$ = moderate ($10 B 20), $$$ = expensive (> $20 for entrees)

OLD TOWN / CONVENTION CENTER AREA

  • Akbar, 44 N. Fair Oaks, 577-9916. Innovative Indian cuisine. $$
  • Buca de Beppo, 80 W. Green St, 792 7272. Italian food in a family dining setting. Oversized portions are shared by everyone. Go only in large groups and particularly if you are in a boisterous mood and love garlic. Reservations recommended. $$
  • Cafe Bizou, 91 North Raymond Ave., (626) 792-9923, A nice assortment of California cuisine, very reasonably priced. Pay the extra dollar for a soup or salad. Reservations recommended. $$
  • Cafe Santorini, 64 W. Union St., (626) 564-4200. Mediterranean food in a comfortable setting. Eat out on the balcony if the weather is good. $$.
  • Cheesecake Factory, 2 W. Colorado, 584-6000. California cuisine. Very popular and crowded. $$
  • Central Park, 219 S. Fair Oaks, (626) 449-4499, A nice assortment of California cuisine in a comfortable bistro atmosphere. $$
  • McCormick and Schmick's, 111 N. Los Robles (just south of the Doubletree Hotel), 405-0064. Good seafood and steaks in a nice setting. $$
  • Mi Piace, 25 E. Colorado, 795-3131. Trendy Italian. Sidewalk tables are nice for lunch. A la carte menu gets expensive for dinner. $$ B $$$
  • Saladang, 363 S. Fair Oaks, 793 8123. Good Thai food but restaurant often infested with yuppies. $$
  • Sorriso, 46 E. Colorado, 793-2233. Trendy Italian. Good food but costly. $$$
  • Yugean Kang's, 67 N. Raymond Ave, 585-0855. Trendy Chinese. $$

LAKE AVENUE AND VICINITY

  • Bistro 45, 45 S. Mentor, 795-2478. The 2000 DPS Local Organizing Co-Chair's favorite French restaurant. Expensive but very good. Reservations recommended. $$$
  • Burger Continental, 535 S. Lake Ave, 792 6634. 2000 DPS Chair's favorite place (but he bought Microsoft at $89, so his judgement is questionable). The ultimate Caltech hangout. Mediterranean (mostly Greek) food. Belly dancers at lunch and dinner time. Worth a visit. $$
  • Celestino, 141 S. Lake Ave, 795-4006. The 2000 DPS Local Organizing Co-Chair's favorite Italian restaurant. Excellent Italian food in a very nice setting. Expensive but worth it. Reservations recommended. $$$
  • Green Street, 146 Shopper's Lane (2 block east of Lake, north of Cordova St), 577-7170. Extensive American menu. Great salads. $$
  • La Fiesta Grande, 624 E. Colorado, 795 5577. Good for those who want Mexican food but on a limited budget. Great margaritas. $
  • Panda Express, 218 S. Lake Ave, 796-7710. Good Chinese fast food. $
  • Wolfe Burgers, 46 N. Lake Ave, 792-7292. Best hamburgers in town. $

FARTHER AFIELD

  • Cameron's, 1978 E. Colorado, 793-3474. Seafood. $$
  • Mijares, 145 Palmetto Drive (just off Pasadena St. and north of California Blvd.), 792-2763. A Pasadena institution. Described as as so authentically Mexican, you can't drink the water. Recommended. $$
  • Panda Inn, 3488 E. Foothill Blvd, 793-7300. The 2000 Program Chair's second favorite restaurant. Excellent Mandarin cuisine. Private rooms available. $$
  • Parkway Grill, 510 S. Arroyo, 795-1001. Excellent modern American food and service in a pretentious, upscale setting. Tenured faculty will love it. Reservations recommended. $$$
  • Raymond House on S. Fair Oaks at Glenarm. Expensive but incredibly great food and quality service. Reservations recommended. $$$
  • Suriya Thai Restaurant, 125 W. California Blvd, 584 0066. Good Thai food without yuppies. $
  • Zankou Chicken, 1296 E. Colorado Blvd, 405-1502. Armenian fast food. $
