Subject: DPS Mailing #06-14:  The DPS Needs You, Travel Grants....
Greetings, DPS members,
  1) The DPS Needs You!
  2)  Final Reminder:  DPS Travel Grant Applications due tonight
  3)  Paper ballot requests for DPS elections due Friday
In addition to elected officers and Committee members, there are
several important appointed positions within the DPS.  Two
officers are nearing the end of their appointed terms:
Linda French Emmons--Secretary (2006) (lfrench (at)
Nadine Barlow--Treasurer (2007) (nadine.barlow (at)
For both of these, it is desirable to identify interested persons in
advance of the expiration of the term to provide for overlap and training.
The DPS wants YOU!  If you have an interest or curiosity about these
DPS positions, please talk it over with the current holder of the
position.  Yes, there is work involved, but it is not overwhelming.
Both positions are also rewarding and appreciated by your fellow
DPS members.  They are vital to the success of our Division.
The deadline has been extended to midnight tonight (July 12-13) Hawaii
A small number of travel grants for the 2006 DPS meeting are available.
These are primarily intended for students, but post-doctoral
scientists without other means of support will also be considered.
Grants will consist of $300 plus a waiver of registration fees.
Preference will be given to those who have not received a DPS travel grant
in the past.
The application package should be no longer than the equivalent of five
pages and contain the following:
1) A copy of the abstract of the paper to be presented at the meeting.
Both oral and poster papers are eligible. The abstract will also have
to be submitted by the regular procedure by the regular deadline of July 26.
2) A brief letter by the applicant describing the scientific significance
of the research and any further justification for attending the
meeting (e.g., job hunting).
3) A brief letter of endorsement by the advisor, confirming the need
for travel assistance and the unavailability of full travel support
from other sources.
4) A brief CV, including degree status.
The deadline for submission of the application for a travel grant
is Wednesday 12 July 2006. This date is chosen so that applicants will
know if they have travel support before the official abstract deadline.
The complete application package should be sent as a single e-mail
attachment (in PDF, PostScript, or plain text format) to the DPS Vice-Chair,
Dr. Guy Consolmagno (gjc @ The subject line of the
e-mail should read "DPS Travel Grant", and the name of the
attached application file should include the last name of the
applicant (e.g., "Smith_DPStravel.pdf").
Applications will be read by members of the DPS Committee and the decision
on travel grants will be communicated to all applicants prior to the
abstract deadline of Wednesday 26 July 2006.
Anyone wishing to vote in the DPS elections using a paper ballot should
have his/her request in to me by this Friday, July 14.  Online voting
will commence on Monday, July 17; candidate statements will be
forthcoming shortly.  --LFE
