     NASA announces the availability of observing time on the
Keck I and Keck II telescopes at the W.M.Keck Observatory.
Applications for Semester 2002A, from Feb. 1 to July 31, 2002, 
are due on September 5, 2001.
     As a 1/6 partner in the Keck Observatory, NASA receives 
an allocation of approximately 43 nights per semester on the
two telescopes combined.  A fraction of this time is used for
interferometry.  The rest of this time is available for 
single-telescope scientific investigations in 3 discipline
areas: detection of extrasolar planets, origin and nature of
planetary systems, and investigation of our own solar system.

Nick Schneider, the DPS E-mailer since the electronic newsletter was
started almost 10 years ago, has requested to retire from this duty.
We wish to thank him for his dedicated service for all of this time.
Beginning with the previous issue, #01-28, we have moved the mailing 
to the AAS computers in Washington D.C. This is also a good time to 
announce that Melissa McGrath will become the next DPS Secretary-
Treasurer in December. Melissa has taken over the e-mailing as of the 
last issue, with Nick helping and advising as needed to assure a smooth

The first mailing seemed to go smoothly, except for issuing it twice,
for which we apologize.  If you experience any problems receiving
e-mailings, or with formatting or other matters, please notify me
( or Melissa (, and we
will try to take corrective action.

If you need to be a member in order to give your paper, and your
membership is not current by September 1, you will be required to renew
for 2001 plus 2002 before you can give your paper.  If you join or
renew by August 31, you may pay for just 2001.  Regular Affiliate dues
are $18 for 2001 and $20 for 2002, or $38 for both years.  Student
Affiliate dues are $13 for 2001 and $15 for 2002, $28 total.  New
student affiliate members will receive two years membership for $13
($15 starting in 2002).

In order to obtain the member rate for early registration for the
meeting, your membership must be in order by the early registration
deadline, October 12.  But if your membership is not current by
September 1, you will be required to pay dues for two years, 2001+2002,
as above. So please renew your membership promptly.
